Salisbury, Md. (Wednesday, July 6, 2016) — Twenty Perdue associates from the Corporate Office, Perdue AgriBusiness and Perdue Transportation and their family members rolled up their sleeves and volunteered to help a local Habitat family with their home build. It was a warm spring day but that did not stop volunteers from finishing putting up the Tyvek® sheeting around the house and working on the roof. The build project was in the Church Street community in Salisbury, a neighborhood where Habitat has built multiple  homes and partnered with Perdue on several projects. 

The Franklin P. and Arthur W. Perdue Foundation, the company’s charitable giving arm, recently awarded Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County a $15,000 grant to help a Salisbury family realize the dream of home-ownership.  In addition to the grant, associates wanted to do more and volunteering to help build the home provided the opportunity to lend a hand.

“We are thrilled that a team of Perdue associates took their Saturday to help build a Habitat home for a deserving family,” said Molly Hilligoss, executive director of the Wicomico County Habitat. “In fact, this was the second “Team Build Day” Perdue has scheduled this year. The dedication of Perdue associates to our community is truly evident in their action and we are so very grateful.”

“My participation in the Habitat for Humanity volunteer project was fulfilling, fun and humbling,” said Perdue associate Ira Jones. “In our continued support of Perdue’s corporate stewardship value, my staff and I participated in this Habitat volunteer project as a team-building activity. I had the pleasure to learn more about each one while working side-by-side on a roof instead of the normal office environment. This was truly a demonstration of teamwork.”

Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County was founded in 1987; since then the affiliate has built 62 homes locally. Through volunteer labor and tax-deductible donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent homes with the help of the homeowner (partner) families. Habitat homes are sold to partner families at no profit, financed with affordable, no-interest loans. The homeowners’ monthly mortgage payments come back to the affiliate to help build more homes for more families.
