Perdue Foundation Awards $5,000 Grant To Greater Berks Food Bank
February 12, 2019
Salisbury, Md. (February 12, 2019) — Perdue Farms, through a grant funded by the Franklin P. and Arthur W. Perdue Foundation, has provided $5,000 to support the Greater Berks Food Bank “Drive Hunger Away” campaign to purchase a new refrigerated box truck.
The new truck will enable Greater Berks Food Bank to distribute thousands of pounds of nutritious frozen and fresh food through its Mobile Market distribution program that serves as many as 700 families a month at seven distribution sites in Berks and Schuylkill counties. The truck will also serve the food bank’s Mobile Direct program, which provides frozen and fresh food to more than 3,000 in-need seniors monthly.
“Greater Berks Food Bank is tremendously grateful for Perdue Farms’ help in the fight against hunger,” said Peg Bianca, executive director of Greater Berks Food Bank. “Each week, we receive thousands of pounds of high-quality proteins from Perdue to distribute to those we serve. Additionally, this grant we were awarded was a huge boost to our campaign to acquire a new truck for our Mobile Market and Mobile Direct programs.”
As part of Perdue’s partnership with Feeding America, of which Greater Berks Food Bank is a valued member, the company also provides regular donations of nutritious no-antibiotics chicken to support the food bank’s hunger relief initiatives. In 2018, Perdue provided 310,000 pounds of protein.
“The problem of hunger is very real in America. We were happy at Perdue to help Greater Berks Food Bank address this serious issue throughout our communities,” said Kim Nechay, executive director of the Perdue Foundation. “The Greater Berks Food Bank is making tremendous strides to end hunger in the Reading area and surrounding communities, and we are happy to continue our support.”
