Perdue $8,600 Grant Helps South Surry Volunteer Fire Department in Rural North Carolina Purchase New Firefighting Equipment

June 20, 2022

Salisbury, Md. (Monday, June 20, 2022) — The Franklin P. and Arthur W. Perdue Foundation, the charitable giving arm of Perdue Farms, is supporting South Surry Volunteer Fire Department in Dobson, N.C., with an $8,600 grant to purchase a large diameter hose to help move water faster to fight fires. The donation is part of the company’s Delivering Hope to Our Neighbors® initiative focused on improving quality of life and building strong communities.

South Surry VFD is a volunteer first-response fire department in a rural part of southern Surry County. The station operates with three buildings with 38 firefighters, who respond to 550 calls per year while serving almost 5,000 citizens of southern Surry County, according to South Surry VFD Chief Tony Tilley.

“With no fire hydrants in our rural area, we rely on tankers to haul water and pump to our engines,” he added. “With the new large diameter hose, we will use two engines to relay pump while the tankers reload and haul more water. We’re grateful for the support from Perdue.”

Kim Nechay, executive director of the Perdue Foundation, praised the work of South Surry VFD.

“At Perdue, we love to invest in those who serve us and our communities,” she said. “This new hose should certainly make a difference to the South Surry Volunteer Fire Department and improve their efforts to protect and serve.”
