Perdue Farms awards $2,500 to Women Supporting Women Inc. in Maryland

Funds support meal-delivery program to breast cancer survivors

July 15, 2021

SALISBURY, MD. (Thursday, July 15, 2021) — Perdue Farms, through its Franklin P. and Arthur W. Perdue Foundation, has awarded a $2,500 grant to Women Supporting Women Inc. (WSW) to support its new Meal Prep and Delivery Program.

“This new program will deliver nutritious pre-prepared meals to breast cancer survivors living in the Lower Shore’s three counties,” said Cindy Feist, Women Supporting Women executive director. “We will qualify 20 survivors who are undergoing radiation and chemotherapy and they will each receive six prepared meals once a week for two weeks, delivered to their homes. Delivery is scheduled when convenient for the survivor, especially when they are going to treatments. Each survivor will also receive one $30 gift card to Food Lion stores.”

The mission of Women Supporting Women (WSW) is to provide awareness, education and support for those affected by breast cancer across Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

“These funds from the Perdue Foundation spare the survivors from the need and exposure of risking their health by going to a grocery store and the physical demands of preparing a meal,” Feist said. “During a pandemic, cancer survivors are at much greater risk of contracting a virus than healthy women of the same age.”

During its 27 years of supporting women with breast cancer, Feist noted that the overwhelming majority of women who use WSW services are from households with limited financial resources. This reality, coupled with a COVID-19-related income loss experienced by thousands on the Lower Shore, presents pressing difficulties upon survivors.

“Perdue Farms is very happy to award this grant to Women Supporting Women Inc.’s new Meal Prep and Delivery Program,” said Kim Nechay, executive director of the Perdue Foundation. “This program will benefit our Lower Shore community by providing no-cost assistance to women who need it the most during a period of great challenge in their lives.”
