Thorntown Public Library in Indiana receives $2,000 Perdue Foundation grant for children’s summer reading program

Salisbury, Md. (Tuesday, June 14, 2016) — The Thorntown Public Library has received a $2,000 grant from the Franklin P. and Arthur W. Perdue Foundation to help fund the Children’s Summer Reading Program for 2016. The Foundation is the charitable giving arm of Perdue Farms.
“Summer reading is an important component in a child’s development and education,” said Barb Lebo, children’s librarian at the Thorntown Public Library. “The six-week program encourages reading and learning during the summer, a time when reading is often neglected and children lose their learning momentum in the educational process. We are grateful to Perdue and the Foundation for their financial support.”
The Children’s Summer Reading Program, which began in June, primarily targets elementary school-age children that need to work on their reading skills, although the program is open to anyone up to age 18. As Lebo explains, the summer reading program addresses the “summer slide – the tendency to lose some of the achievement gains children make during the previous school year.”

We do this by addressing a number of priorities, one of which is education,” said Michael Maroney, manager of Perdue’s breeder operations in Thorntown. “We are very happy to provide funding for the Thorntown Library’s Summer Reading Program. We hope that our grant helps assure a fun and learning-filled summer for the children.”
